Decent murder mystery, surprising twist but not that exciting. I did like the narrator and the characters were varied but not enough resolution for the rest of the side characters.

Writing style was very convoluted and difficult to immerse myself into. I just ended up bored.

1924 Maybury-in-the-Marsh. Wealthy Amy Phelps says she believes a ghost of an ancestor is haunting her, but it is unlikely she really believes that.  Writer of a ghost book Arbuthnot 'Arbie' Swift and vicar's daughter Valentina Coulton-James spend the night on ghost watch. Several nights later Miss Pnelps is found dead, murdered  by cyanide poisoning in her locked bedroom. Inspector Gorringe Investigates, with Arbie and Val deciding to help.
An entertaining historical mystery. A good start to this new series with its likeable main characters.

Arbie and Val are an entertaining pair.

Quite fun but needs a good editor to remove about 90% of the adverbs, and quite a few of the adjectives, and a smattering of nouns…

This is a fun cozy mystery set in 1920's rural England. The main character has a P.G. Wodehouse feel that I really appreciated as I love that author. It has all the elements of a classic British whodunit, and I found it an enjoyable read. The cast of characters were varied and interesting, and the setting of a traditional British village gave the book that cozy feeling that lovers of this genre will love.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

My fault this one. I've been enjoying a few crime fiction novels on the cosier end of the spectrum recently, but this one, alas, was too far into that world for my taste. Perfectly good novel for fans of that overtly English, slightly dotty, eccentric small village style of novel. Just not for me.
