The story sand writing was decent enough, but it felt like the main character could do no wrong and started to get on my nerves. There's also just a racist undertone to this whole book that I really didn't enjoy.

This three-star review might seem unfair, as most people rate this book much more highly. But, here's the deal - the first half was remarkable. Amazing, in fact. But, the hard shift into romance and then "the Fred and Archie show" is ludicrous. It does nothing to me except take away from the story. Moving so far away from the focal point for so long does a huge disservice to Thea and to the story as a whole.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I hadn't read any Cather since college so it was nice to revisit her elegant, descriptive prose. It was beautifully written and a quick, pleasing read. There were times the descriptions of Thea (the heroine) seemed a little drawn out, but the reverence for art and an artist's process was wonderful! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a bit of inspiration regarding their artistry.

One of my very favorite books, ever.

I finally finished this one today. I did enjoy it, overall, but it's my least favorite of her books.

I always find Cather's characters incredibly compelling. While this wasn't my favorite of her novels, I still felt the absolute need to know what would happen, as though this was the story of real people rather than fiction.
