slow-paced

I DNF this book. As an opera singer and musician, I desperately wanted to love this book. However, it is very slow paced, and the story seems to bounce all over the place. Maybe I will try again at a later date, but there are far too many books I want to read rather than than spend it on something I am not in love with.

It hurts me to give this rating. I loved My Antonia and really enjoyed O Pioneers. But this book felt flabby. DNF

Interesting book, but not really sure what the point was. It seemed to just be a chronology of events in a fictional character’s life. It wasn’t clear to me why these particular events were included, while others that weren’t detailed were referred to after they happened. I did enjoy the homespun personalities of Ray and Dr. Archer.

For most of this I was enthralled, Cather doing what she does best - writing places into the characters who make them. I was bummed that the ending felt like a flop for me, I didn’t think that’s where she was driving towards and I was left a bit flat. Still a good representation of Cather, but I’d point a new reader in a different direction to encounter her best.
