Some books touted as beach reads mislead with the cover and title but not The Islanders, it's everything that I hoped it would be and I loved it! This was a total beach read with substance. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
We meet the 3 main characters, Lu, Joy and Anthony who each have secrets and who each find comfort (for different reasons) on Block Island. The short chapters alternate between each character which often, for me, can be an issue but the way the author developed each of these characters, I felt like I knew them. In fact, they seemed so real that I found myself irritated with Anthony on many occasions…I just wanted him to get it together! I love that he was an author who had BIG past mistakes hanging over him, along with the fact that he had his larger than life best selling writes 3 books a year author father (definite James Patterson vibes here) hovering over his life and career.
⠀⠀
I loved Joy and could really sympathize with her as a mom trying to maintain a connection with a teenager who wanted her freedom. So much of Lu’s character also resonated with me as far as her being a stay at home mom who felt like she may need something more….I wasn’t on board with her secret keeping but that did make her story more interesting. I listened to this partly on audio and thought it completely brought the characters to life.

3.5 stars. Such a fun, light hearted book. But also tackles real life issues (parenting, relationships, love & loss). I really enjoyed Joy and Anthony’s relationship and I loved how all three characters stories intertwined.

After finishing The Islanders I need to get back to the beach ASAP before the summer ends!

This book couldn’t have been more perfect for a summer reading lineup so shout out to @booksparks for this pick.

The Islanders is based on Block Island in Rhode Island and centers around three characters whose stories interlace each other’s.

When I first started the book, I was worried I wouldn’t be invested enough in the three characters but I was pleasantly surprised. First we have Anthony, struggling author trying to find solitude. Then we have Joy, single mom and whopie pie boss. Lastly there’s Lu, mother of two whose online life doesn’t exactly mirror her real life. These characters were interesting and so cleverly written. I really enjoyed watching them progress!

Thoroughly enjoyable read. Good characters, interesting story. I wanted to spend time on this island (and try these whoopee pies!)

I loved this sweet and fun to read story. It's the story of 3 people on the island for different reasons and their lives intersect. Each has his/her own healing to do. As they intersect and grow and go through experiences, we are there along with them, cheering them on and crossing our fingers. This is a generally feel good book with some real life issues thrown in but not a ton of depth in any of them. Lovely summer story.

Great story and setting. I knew nothing about Block Island. Character development was great and it was a very interesting book all around.

Really wanted to like this more. Was pretty fluffy in the beginning. Got tedious toward the middle. Didn’t really think Joy’s “secret” was such a secret. I don’t know. A lot of cliches and predictability.

My husband bought me this book for my birthday and I loved it! A little different than my normal book but it’s very well written. I instantly took to all the characters, they’re all well drawn and fleshed out. There’s mystery and suspense and romance and one major plot twist that I did not see coming at all. Will be adding the author to my to be read list!

What a pleasant, delicious diversion! There are no pretentions about being fine literature, but It does carry you off! The writing is sound, the characters are convincing. Yet again, MMM has chosen a New England waterfront town for the setting – almost always a draw for me! The dynamics of the summer people’s interaction with the year round residents are believable, and contribute in no small way to the story line. I seem to remember similar undercurrents in an earlier book of hers, but that was fine! It was still enjoyable to be immersed in a sure winner! I was sure she would deliver, and she did!
