Gave up on reading because the main characters were, frankly, too annoying. Only one of the Smiley books I gave up on - the others were all thrilling reads.
The next book in the series only has Smiley in for a couple of cameos, albeit ones with quite a lot of power behind them (in his way).
The story itself is a little disjointed and peripatetic as an outdated agency come across a potential lead and decide to train up a new spy (well, retrain an old one). le Carre delights in portraying the aging, out of touch old boy's club and the devastating impact they have in those them come into contact with.
It builds up and up and feels like it's never going to break out but that's the point. When the end comes, it's bleak, brutal and oh so casual. Perhaps not the happiest of reads but I get the impression this was a more realistic portrayal of the system based on his experiences.
Michael Jayston does another excellent job of narration. He suits this series so well. Interesting and better than the first two stories.

This might feel slightly tedious about midway through. So much of it is setup, and detail, that your mileage may vary as far as how much it keeps your interest. But I thought the last part of the book made all the setup worth it. Incredibly tense with a beautiful and haunting ending. Superb stuff.
