tragic, devastating, hard-hitting, and a really good story, with insights—at times philosophical—on love and life. this book illuminates how prescriptive societal ideas about gender and sexuality inflict suffering and inner conflict; love and (self-)hatred become destructively and inextricably entwined. it also led me to reflect on how special and beautiful it is to connect with another human and how connection is not something to regard trivially or as a waste. the exploration of American expatriate identity within Paris and broader French society was interesting as well.

Gorgeously written, heart-wrenching I’m so many ways. I opted to listen to this as an Audible book, and the narrator was wonderful, really bringing the story to life. Baldwin’s talent shone in this novel, and I was really drawn to and sympathetic toward most of the characters. (Jacques — maybe not so much. Ha!) Glad I chose something out of my normal literary selection box. This was an excellent read.
