Read this in under 3 days. A very captivating story, although some parts of the story felt a bit overly coincidental or tragic.

Hosseini is an amazing storyteller and although I've never visited the Middle East he managed to paint a lively picture of past and present Afghanistan.

Will definitely read his other books too.

This book was really hard to read, and although I know it’s a beautiful and impactful story, I found the things described in it to be far too graphic for me. As someone who has experienced some of what is mentioned in this book, the beginning of chapter 7 was really difficult to read and due to recommendations from friends who had read more, I decided I couldn’t handle the lengths this book went. I was reading this for school and had to talk to my teacher and make an exception (and she is beyond amazing for being so accommodating with it) so this was not a light decision. However, if you can handle it, the writing is beautiful and impactful. It will be an experience to read for you and I recommend you to try it if you are able to tolerate what’s in it. Keep in mind the content warnings are understatements for the most part.

This book made me incredibly emotional. I wish I read it sooner. Really satisfying read, excellent character development, and the writing was beautiful and haunting. I absolutely could not put this book down when I was reading it.

I loved many things about this book but somewhere in the final third the plot exceeded my limit for believable coincidences. In some places, it feels so real it can't be fiction; in others, it reads like the whole narrative was formulated around poetic justice. Despite some letdown at the end, I enjoyed Hosseini's writing style and the immersion into place and culture. I would like to read his other novels, eventually.
