Hmm I’m not sure about this one. Im going down and trying to read every single Vonnegut book bc he means so much to me but I was slightly disappointed with this one.
For the first time, I was exposed to Vonnegut’s personal life, through a crazy 4th wall break that I did not expect from him. Made me think a lot about the creative process; and my prior relationship with him as an author…. Not a person. It made me kind of uncomfortable which is maybe my own fault when I have relied on him so much to provide me with a reliable fantasy. and I would definitely not recommend this be the first book someone to read by him. I enjoyed getting to know him through his art first….
This book is racist and I cannot get past it. The use of racism to “satirize” racism is lazy, and tarantino-esque. An excuse to fictionalize racist ideas.
Once again, Vonnegut is so creative, and his endings are always beautiful, and sad, and I love seeing old characters, but something was off about this book….
“There is no order in the world around us, and we must adapt ourselves to the requirement of chaos instead”
“I had come to the conclusion that there was nothing sacred about myself or about any human being, that we were all machines, doomed to collide and collide and collide. For want of anything better to do, we became fans of collisions”

Nobody could touch Vonnegut for nonsensical wisdom when he was in full flight. Genius.

I love Vonnegut. Nihilistic, deterministic, funny, super meta, all of the time. This one took a little long, was very random, and I wasn't really sure what the point was - but I guess that was probably the point.
