"I had given him a life not worth living, but I had also given him an iron will to live. This
was a common combination on the planet Earth."

More like 3.5 stars but I'll round up for Mr. Vonnegut on account of the phenomenal epilogue. The story itself is a rather funny satire of American society, though to me the most interesting parts were Kurt's reflections on the interactions between an author and their characters. Contains about 58 more hard R's than I was expecting. It's no Slaughterhouse-Five or Cat's Cradle but it's still Vonnegut and that alone makes it worth reading.

I'm new to Vonnegut but I'm really enjoying the trip. I feel like the dude was writing as much to work through his own mess as for any other reason. I also feel like Grant Morrison must have drawn at least a little inspiration from this source.

If you take this book as piece of narrative prose, it's probably only three stars.

If you take this book as a collection of thoughtful ideas, meant to make you think and expand your consciousness, it's probably five stars.

So I averaged it as four stars.

I remember reading bits of this book as a young man. I recall thinking it was funny and dirty and didn't make any sense.

Which is why I believe that Vonnegut isn't for young people. Or at least not young white cis het privileged males that grew up in small towns and didn't know anything about the world.

I had to grow up a bit to learn what all oppressed people know by heart. We live in an imperfect world and things which are initially "funny and dirty and didn't make sense" are really sad and deep and make perfect, if horrible, sense.

The book is funny, much like a wise man will use humor to show you truth. It's also pretty meta, and I think this somehow detracts from the story.

OTOH, this book has the greatest number of "aha" moments I've read in a Vonnegut book.

Definitely worth reading.

pretty good but why so many slurs kurt? also i didn’t know wtf was happening the whole time

I really loved this, the absurdity, the humor, the rich details that don't do anything for the storyline but make the story anyways.  Maybe it's the Midwest in us, but I love Vonnegut's storytelling style.  Not the biggest fan of reading the N word so much, though.

One of the best books I have ever read. A masterpiece in its humor and the best Vonnegut I have read so far. Better than Slaughterhouse Five and Cat's Cradle. Just hilarious and deep and invades your mind in its simplicity.
Trout's short stories seem to me like Vonnegut had ideas for stories but never had the time to write them. So he made them one of Trout's stories and put its synopsis in this book.
Little section after little section made me giggle and think. WOW. Hahahahahahaha. Thanks Vonnegut. You made my month with this book.
