The History of Love

3.94 AVERAGE

I picked this one for our book club based on the recommendations of a few English teachers. Overall, I give this one 3.5 stars. I was utterly confused throughout the book as the chapters move from one character to another and change time periods throughout. But, even though I was confused, I was still intrigued by how the characters intertwined and needed to keep reading. I am glad I tackled this one and can't wait to understand it better when we discuss it at book club.

I’ve got mixed feelings about this.

I adored it at the start. I was deeply moved by how she painfully described the life of a lonely old man. just a few chapters in and I already shed a tear. This book is obviously sad and tragic - with the Holocaust, lost love, isolation - I know what I’m getting myself into. But every sad story needs a glimpse of hope to make it bearable, and I struggled to find that in here.

The story slowly became too convoluted to me. Too many characters and perspectives from so many random people. Of course, in the end, the pieces ‘tried’ to fall into place but it felt rushed and shallow.

There’s some beautiful quotes to keep, so I’m grateful anyway.

I don't like not knowing and the end of this book leaves me with a lot of uncertainty, so factor that into my 4 stars
Can't ask all the questions I have left over without giving much away but there are more than a few questions there.
I did enjoy the book and found it very readable, but wish some things had been made clearer at the end.

Amazing book, the story is adorable and engaging, I loved it from beginning to end and keep recommending it to everyone!
emotional funny mysterious

This was my second reading of this book and I like it just as much as I did the first time. It is complex, and you have to pay attention, but if you put the work in you will be rewarded.
