❤️ this is the first book i’ve ever re-read. the first time i read it was 10 years ago, and i loved it so much, but when i saw it again at the thrift store recently, it bothered me to not be able to remember the story very well, so i bought the $3 copy and blew through it over the last two days compliments of a fever induced, forced rest.
it’s so beautiful. it’s sad. maintains my 5+ star rating and remains a forever favorite.
leo and alma meet as children and their friendship turns to love. their time together is short, but impactful. he never recovers. she’s not left with much of a choice. it’s heartbreaking, but sweetly so ... the intertwining of the lives in the story make it so.
“her kiss was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering”
he fell in love. it was his life.
“because nothing makes me happier and nothing makes me sadder than you”
❤️

I read this book too fast, because I could not put it down. I will have to reread it... this time slowly, taking in every word.
I almost gave this four stars, because there were parts that I found confusing, but instead, gave it five because of the emotions it evoked inside of me while reading it. So much sadness, and love, and tears. So great.

This is one of those books where "it's not you, it's me." This book is beautiful and heartbreaking. Ms. Krauss' writing is flawless. I'm sure in the right hands this book would be adored and loved, but for me it was slow, and for as short as it is, it took me forever to get through.

I had this book on a shelf at my parents' house for around seven years. I remember starting reading it at the time and hating it (honestly don't remember why). I grabbed it recently and the experience couldn't have been more different. I haven't read something so plot-driven in a long time, with so many twists and turns, and although I usually prefer slower-paced books, more character-driven, this really really caught my attention and made me really happy. "This book restores your faith in fiction", it says on the front cover. And it really does. What a lovely, warm read.
Been meaning to read it for so long. Better late than never!
Loved it so much. Also, saw a lady on the train reading the exact same book and I think that's pretty magical.
