The History of Love

This book was so, so beautifully written. I loved the story and loved the ending. It wasn't a page-turner per say, but I found myself eagerly anticipating what would happen next. It was difficult to decipher who was telling the story at times, and there was one story line that didn't really fit into the book, but I loved the story. I don't think it's a book everyone would love, but I really enjoyed this.
emotional reflective sad slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: N/A
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

The History of Love was not perfect. And yet. It was more than good.

Beautiful characters make up for a less coherent and bit confusing storyline, and a rather ambiguous ending I didn't feel quite happy with.

I owe Krauss the urge to get back to writing myself, and that's more than enough. So, thank you :)

A sweet, not too saccharine, love story

I really don't know what people see in this book. Ugh. I swear I stopped reading it four times in order to go read other books. I really don't need to know any more about Leo's bowels.

While this book is a story of love in its many forms; a daughters love for her mother, a young man's love for his childhood sweetheart, a father's love for his son. Young Alma intervenes in the communication between her mother and the man for whom she is translating a novel in the hopes that this will spark romance between them. Meanwhile, Leo Gursky, a survivor from Germany's invasion to Poland, suffers from the lost love of his sweetheart. These two people are connected by the novel Gursky wrote but never published. It is a haunting tale about life postponed but I often felt that some unknown quantity was missing.

Not a casual read. Requires great concentration as the character and plot and timeline weave in and out without warning or overt signage. Overall an interesting and provocative book with much to say. I'll be pondering these pages long after I put the book down.

4.5⭐⭐⭐⭐This was a complex read. Most of the book I felt like I had missed details that were then later revealed as the book unraveled. I still think I need to reread it for a more complete understanding. It reads like a masterpiece you would dissect in a college literature class. I was thoroughly drawn in.

I really enjoyed this novel. I thought it was beautifully written and emotionally stirring. The two main characters, a young girl and an old man, were artistically portrayed so that I felt like I really knew them. I cried, but was left with a a very positive feeling.

It was interesting and had some depressing concepts on getting older and never being recognized in life.
