This was an enjoyable ending to this series. I wasn't sure where it was going to go, and thought this was a trilogy, but was glad it was only two books. I enjoyed the characters, but there were times where things lagged. Overall, enjoyable for sure...more review to come
Sorry, I just could not take it anymore. Why take the names of real people and places and then not write a historical novel? Why play havoc with real geographic locations? Why does nobody of these cardboard cutouts have a character trait? Why does the main character do any of what she does? What is her motivation? How on earth are we supposed to believe that she is good at... anything, really, but especially Witch Hunting when there is never any indication of that? I feel bad that the library wasted money on this.
The King Slayer is the second and last book in The Witch Hunter dualogy. Because it only has two books in the series it was fast-paced and sometimes a little bit rushed.
“I think, in time, you’ll either be my greatest mistake or my greatest victory.”
The story picks up a few months after the ending of 'The Witch Hunter' and we come to see how Elizabeth has to live without her stigma and how slowly its changing John. Elizabeth has grown alot thoughout the series and she is alot more defenseless than she was before, she has to train to be support to this brewing war that is going to happen. I didnt like Elizabeth as much as i did in the first book, she was so dependend on John and everyone else as for before she lost her stigma she was totally kickass! The one that changes the most in this book is John, because of the Stigma that he now has he is becoming a fighter and an annoyance. I loved how sweet he was in the first book. He’s still got that soft side, but he is not acting like himself.
The introduction of a few new characters was also really well done, Malcome for instance was different than that i had in mind. Alot of people talk about rape in this book, but personally i dont see that kind of theme in this story. Ofcourse Elizabeth was Malcoms misstress without her really wanting to be that but he never really raped her in my opinion. He asked her and showed he was in love with her, he never knew she didnt want to be with him. It's all because Elizabeth didn't speak out untill now that he didnt know she didnt love him like he did her (dont hate me for this but its just my few on the story, im not by al means a supporter of rape!!).
Virginia's writing was as addictive as in the first book - it's quick and easy to read but never gets bored, she always managed to keep me interested so that's a good thing! I was surprised at some of the plot twists and expected some others but overall it was a good mixture for me and constantly wanted to know more. I was a little bit shocked that this was a duology because when i started reading this book i didn't know.. it took me by suprise that this was the last book. Why i gave this one 4 stars instead of 5 is because i didn't really like the character change in Elizabeth, i didnt feel right for it to end that way and Elizabeth not being in controlle. But i would recommend this duology to everyone who is in for a little bit of fantasy and witch hunt!

Also ich hatte schon recht Mühe wieder hineinzufinden.

I was glad that Caleb was brought back in this because his "death" in the first one seemed anticlimactic and not final. No body, not dead, however the saying goes. I'd kind of like a novella from Caleb's POV. What's it like to be a revenant for Blackwell? Did he ever really care about Elizabeth the way she cared for him? Or she thought she cared for him anyway. Was he really going to help release her from prison or was he just bullshitting? I think it kind of sucks how he just kind of fucks off at the end. Sure, he was with the enemy at first but he came around to the other side. It just felt like a convenient way to get rid of him. I don't know, I thought Caleb was an interesting character, more could've been done with him and his relationship with Elizabeth. Not a love triangle sort of thing but more their history and the loyalty that goes with that history. I mean she forgave Malcolm but not Caleb? Caleb, who was brainwashed by Blackwell like she was. Her best friend her entire life. I could go on but in essence: closure. There was no closure here for me.
George. Who the fuck is George? Dude popped in halfway through and I couldn't remember who he was. Still can't.
Characters that I pictured as other characters even though some aren't even remotely alike.
Keagan and Malcolm as Brienne and Podrick
Nicholas as Dumbledore/Gandalf
Blackwell as Voldemort
I unintentionally did this to myself mentally as I was reading this. As I said they're not even really alike. Keagan is big like Brienne but uses magic instead of weapons. Malcolm is nothing like Podrick aside from being the partner of a larger, skilled companion. Nicholas is a good wizard that dies at the end involving some deceit to the main protagonist. I thought of Gandalf when he wore the white robes at the end. Blackwell is an evil wizard with the stigma being like a horcrux? I know I'm totally wrong about that as I haven't read Harry Potter but it's sort of similar. None of this matters, it's just something that happens sometimes, envisioning characters from other stories because of vague similarities.
There were some very minor characters that reminded me of other people too. One being Bray and the other being Ambrose. And of course, I hear those names and I can only think of these two assholes:

So that was nice to picture every time those two came up.
On that note, a short line that reminded me of JeriGOAT:
Did you break the walls down? Or more appropriate, since this line was during a fade to black sex scene: When the lights went out and the walls came down, did you sound just like animals?

There are no jokes here, only the illusion of jokes. And as this has just devolved into wrestling GIFs, I leave you with a different Kingslayer breaking John Cena's nose with his achilles knee. Because it pleases me.

This book is an excellent conclusion to the two book series. Elizabeth no longer has her stigma, and must learn to live without it's self-healing properties. John, who now has the stigma, is changing due to Blackwell's magic, and Elizabeth wishes to save him and kill Blackwell. There is war and romance, magic and transformation and growth of the main characters.
Ok so the ending of the book was bittersweet...I won't say why, you'll have to read to find out...But I DO give 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up!! I love the action, adventure, swirling emotions, and all-out war and deception of this book. I'd say I hope there's another one, but this book struck with me a note of finality that there would not be another...I actually like that in a book...I hate when I'm left in a cliff-hanger full of "what the hell!?!?" But with that in mind, so much more in the story can be explored and told IF the story so chooses. All in all, I am going to have to say that this is one of the better books I have read this year.
Amazing. I loved the first one, so I've never picked up a book faster. What a way to close a story. Loved it :)
3.5
I liked it better than the 1st. And it was a really fun read.
