I liked it! It's such a shame the first 25% of this book is such a slog because once it gets going it's very good, with the action tense and at times properly horrifying and a lot more mysterious than I remember it being. It is however written clunkily (might be a translation issue) and is so heavy-handed with exposition that it feels like I was reading a wikipedia article at times.

Glukhovsky does his best to explore some extremely clear themes and narrative concepts; the place of humanity on Earth, the validity and use of faith, philosophy and politics in the face of armageddon and regular life, and the hero's journey among a few others. I loved the building of various myths around Artyom, and while it was a bit too on the nose with the hero's journey stuff I still really enjoyed the plot as a whole, the ending especially was great and one of the few times in the book you really felt like you were reading something properly breaktaking.

While it was nice to see a bit more depth that I was expecting from this book, it is exposited so awkwardly and explained so frankly that at times it became annoying, and he can't seem to allow the reader to think or develop their own ideas at all. An early section stood out to me after the first memory of his mother, where a nice little flashback is overexplained afterward and loses all mystery, another example being the little speech Artyom gives himself while examining his own free will. You have to trust and allow the reader to come to their own conclusions.

That section in particular was one of a few where you feel the fourth wall almost break, and it felt like the author really just wanted to have a rant about faith that frankly wasn't all that coherent given the surprising depth some of the previous chapters had given those concepts and the conclusion of the story. There was another particularly egregious section where Artyom refers to himself as the main character, and other where he directly names the "Odyssey" he has been on.

By far my favorite part of the book is the dreamlike exploration of the newfound use of telepathy on mankind, and how we see Artyom's journey in attempting to find a reason for this and his connection to the tunnels. I love that it wasn't overexplained and felt truly alien at times, the chat with the singular philosophers like Khan and the two old men at Polyanka about their relationships with this new entity of the Metro was fascinating. Tied to this the horror in the book is great, especially just as he begins his journey, the

death of Bourbon

is where the book turned around completley for me.

I wish the book had leaned into that feeling of mythology, spirituality and horror and away from the clunky political discussion and encyclopedic listing of train stations.

Uitgeverij Glagoslav is nieuw in Nederland, maar ze beginnen allerminst voorzichtig. Gloechovski's Metro 2033 had zich al bewezen in het thuisland, maar dat is niet altijd een garantie op succes in een klein landje als Nederland. Zeker niet met een ellenlange politieke en historische introductie van de fictionele wereld in Metro 2033. De Russische namen worden opgesomd, terwijl de vertelstem doorratelt over de totstandkoming van de triestigheid van het nu, in 2033. Wel een beetje heftig, die eerste hoofdstukken. Op het moment dat ik opgeef helderheid en orde in de namen en plaatsen te gieten, en een beetje vlotter doorscan, krijg ik mijn beloning. Het verhaal begint pas echt na die introductie, na die wereldbouw, als hoofdpersoon Artjom op pad gaat. Wat volgt is een adembenemende, bizarre en niet te stoppen reis door tunnels en langs metrostations.

Na een nucleaire oorlog leeft de bevolking ondergronds in de metrostelsels van Moskou. Artjom is een van de handvol overlevenden van een door reusachtige ratten ondergelopen metrostation. Zijn moeder kon hem nog net in de armen van een klein groepje militairen duwen, voordat ook zij bedolven werd onder de harige rattenlijven. Artjom groeit op in Volksvlijt, een station aan de rand van het stelsel. De groeiende dreiging van de zwarten, een eng volkje dat van de oppervlakte komt, brengt Volksvlijt in de problemen. Artjom krijgt de opdracht om zijn metrostation te redden en vertrekt. Zijn reis voert hem langs de indrukwekkend trieste metrostations. Hij vindt en verliest medereizigers, vrienden en vijanden, ontdekt op elk station een eigen cultuur en politiek, betaalt met kogelpatronen en beleeft avontuur na avontuur. Geen ervan is erg leuk voor Artjom, maar hij moet doorzetten om Volksvlijt te redden en daarmee het hele metrostelsel.

Auteur Gloechovski

Metro 2033 houd je lang in zijn macht. Het boek zit boordevol filosofische, psychologische, bovennatuurlijke, politieke, culturele en religieuze belevingen. Het laat in het midden of je er iets van moet leren en zo ja, wat dat dan is. Dat bedenk je als lezer zelf maar. Glorieus en romantisch is deze postapocalyptische onderwereld niet. De wereld die Gloechovski omschrijft is treurig, donker, vochtig, naar, leeg en zeer, zeer eindig. Metro 2033 overdondert je met zijn enorme gelaagdheid en toch voert Artjoms avontuur je razendsnel voort. Spannend is het en tegen het einde zelfs eng, heel erg eng. Gloechovski weet als geen ander de eenzaamheid en wanhoop over te brengen via Artjom aan zijn lezers. Het verhaal eindigt met een mokerstoot, waar je nog lang van moet bijkomen.

Computerspel Metro 2033Metro 2033 is tien jaar geleden online beschikbaar gesteld door de auteur, voor het is 2005 in boekvorm is uitgegeven in Rusland. Inmiddels zijn de rechten aan twintig landen verkocht, is er een computerspel van gemaakt, is Gloechovski in onderhandelingen over een verfilming en heeft hij een vervolg uitgebracht onder de titel Metro 2034. Gaat hij zijn succes voortzetten in Nederland? Wat mij betreft wel. Metro 2033 is een niet voor de hand liggende keuze voor veel lezers. Als sciencefiction cultroman vind je in Nederland een piepklein publiek. Maar toe, lees dit boek, pak het op. Het is uniek.
