An amazing novelette that follows the events of [b:The Last Unicorn|29127|The Last Unicorn (The Last Unicorn, #1)|Peter S. Beagle|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1358147318s/29127.jpg|902304] many years later. The story is told through the eyes and voice of a little girl who takes it upon herself to ask the King's help against the griffin who terrorizes her little village. Early in her journey she meets and joins some people we know from The Last Unicorn.

Though traditional and old fashioned, still the plot is very tight, interesting and moving. Characterization is great, especially if one has read the previous book and can re-connect with the characters and feel the changes in all of them.

The writing style didn't impress me as it didn't work with my tastes very well. I thought narrating the whole story through the eyes and voice of a small child became a bit tiring/boring and rather restrictive after some point. In my view, this is the novelette's main flaw and the reason why my given score went down a bit.

On the other hand though, any story that manages to make my eyes moisten at the end deserves a little bit extra, and this one did just that! Easily recommended to any fan (young or old) of fantasy and of course, needless to say, that anybody that has read The Last Unicorn should read this one as a proper conclusion to the story arc.

it's not as poetic and bittersweet as the last unicorn, one of the stories of my heart, but it is nostalgic, with the same feeling that, just beyond the next bend or deep in someone's eyes, if you look hard enough, there is magic.
