Would y’all kill me if i said that this play is probably one of Shakespeare’s most misunderstood works. It’s really not a play about what stupid teenagers do when they’re in love and more about unjustified and senseless violence and how it not only hurts those who perpetrate that violence, but also innocent people, children. The roles that Romeo and Juliet play are forced upon them. They are forced to become child martyrs when all they wanted to be were lovers. Romeo and Juliet’s love did not murder Mercutio, Tybalt, Lady Montague, or even Romeo and Juliet themselves (although an argument could be made for Paris), it was the blood feud between the two houses that set the stage for their deaths. Whether or not the love between Romeo and Juliet was genuine is not the point, the point is that two children should not have to die in order to stop the adults from fighting.

I read this for the assigned reading, expecting it to be horrifying and horrible, but I must confess that I found the storytelling to be enjoyable (or maybe it was the impressions my class did of Romeo and Juliet when we read it or the fact we just roasted the characters every English lesson). Do I still believe that the "love at first sight" thing is a myth and absolutely absurd? Yes, I MEAN HE WAS IN LOVE WAS ROSALINE JUST TWO SECONDS AGO!! do I still believe it was a little dragged out when they killed themselves for each other? absolutely (very unrealistic but "romantic"), But in the end, I managed to comprehend, And enjoy it, will definitely be checking out more of Shakespeare's works from now on.😉

it’s not that i don’t like shakespeare, because i love him. his writing is genius and i appreciate mostly all of it. the only reason i couldn’t stand this was because romeo and juliet are some of the most insufferable characters i have ever read about. i absolutely am in awe of their annoyingness. despite this, the point was made very clear and i really did like the story.

i might reread but probably not ☑️
