It was really hard to tell when the stories happened in his life, but maybe that was on purpose, since he was constantly on drugs or living through traumatic experiences. Either way, it made it kinda confusing and hard to understand how mature he was at that point.
What I learned/was reminded of: I’m lucky to have grown up without even one of the hardships that he had to face — and he was able to beat the odds by always staying true to himself

This book is one of the most powerful pieces I've ever had to read. Thank you to Luis Rodriguez for sharing his story with us.
TRIGGER WARNINGS:
- sexual assault/rape
- drug abuse
- suicide and suicidal ideation
- self harm
- physical abuse
There are likely others that I've missed. Please be careful before going into this book.

Gang life is hard to read about but this is so interesting.

Informative, written from the perspective of someone who truly grew up in this lifestyle.

3.5 stars. It was a real and raw portrayal of gang life in LA in the 70s, but the writing style was so disjointed that it took me away from the content so often. I couldn't tell when certain stories happened and if it was before or after a particular life lesson was supposedly learned. There were also stories that were included that I never understood why they were included. They were completely separate from the rest of the book with no apparent lesson learned or forward movement.
