“over everything. i choose you”
“off with his head”
I LOVE THIS BOOK. i’ve always loved the story of alice in wonderland and this book blew me away. it was heartbreaking and gives a whole new perspective on the queen of hearts and how she came to be. i absolutely loved jest and how ruthless catherine became after his death. i loved the dark and numb ending. it different and sad, but that’s what makes it so incredible.

BRO SHUT UP MY HEART PHYSICALLY ACHES FOR CATH JEST AND HATTA LIKE WDYM THEY DIDNT GET THEIR HAPPY ENDING
I read this MONTHS ago and I still think about it to this day. All Catherine wanted was to open a bakery with her best friend and be with Jest :(. I hated her mom and didn’t like her dad either. I absolutely ATE UP the secret relationship between Cath and Jest I LOVED every single moment they were together. Jest is such a sweetheart and the way he was going to abandon his mission to be with Cath had me SWOONING. I ended up tabbing and annotating this book for the very first time THATS how much I LOVED it. The ending was gut wrenching for me but I didn’t cry. I really hope we get an alternate ending for this book one day.
I DNF’d this book. It was fine, the writing was fine, the world was fine, but I was just bored most of the time reading this.
soo.
you know how sometimes youre thinking about something and you get real sad and then youre like, why am i thinking about this and getting sad over it, its not real? then youre happy because you remember its not real.
thats this book.
i thought it was written well (although, if you know me, faster would be better) i skipped a lot.
things i liked:
-the fact that the mc was into baking. that felt fresh.
- jest. i loved jest the most and he didnt seem like all the dark and mysterious characters you get a lot. im adding him to my fictional boy crushes.
things i didnt like:
-everything from chapter 37 on.
-cheshire cat. which is ABYSMAL because i love every cheshire cat. this one was so irritating.
-every character that wasnt the 2 mcs. jest and cath ONLY. i really skipped so much about everyone else. who literally cares.
-cath is a spineless weakling.
-she blames actually everyone else for what happens to her. like literally anyone. and takes no action of her own.
-when she finally takes an action is the STUPIDEST ACTION OF ALL and i UNDERSTAND WHY SHE DOESNT DO ACTIONS EVER.
- after getting this super long and super rare chance to get away, shes like, ill just come back later. ??? no?? you cant?? its now or never?? literally??
-also, i would never allow anyone to control me or oppress me the way cath lets people treat her.
- this book is 40% court small talk. that has nothing to do with anything.
both like and dislike:
- the king. i thought he was written really well because hes supposed to be not very masculine and weeny and weak which she 100% got down but it was like BLEH to read. do you know what i mean? like meyer wrote it so well, she wins. but also the king was so irritating!

Spoiler
i understand that jest had to die in order to give cath the incentive to be how she is in Alice in Wonderland. but still. i wouldnt have even written this book because it makes the whole thing seem sad and pointless. idk :/ total bummer.-cheshire cat. which is ABYSMAL because i love every cheshire cat. this one was so irritating.

like they TOLD you jest would die if you went through the door. what do you do? go through the door. and he dies. very abruptly. and you blame someone else?! no...- after getting this super long and super rare chance to get away, shes like, ill just come back later. ??? no?? you cant?? its now or never?? literally??

I honestly gave this book a 2.75 because of the brief sliver where I was enjoying the romance, and the complicated characters.
I would reccomend this book for someone looking for something different, yearning forbidden romance, andsadness.
I will admit, I had higher expectations for this book's ending, although the plot was interesting and unique. I felt let down. It's a close tie between 2.75 stars and 3 for me.
Overall, I could have lived without reading this book. But the themes and dynamics were quite fun.
The rest will contain heavy, MAJOR spoilers for the book. Proceed at your on discretion.
The death scene was very underwhelming, and overall the few chapters after felt rushed and almost a little pointless to me. Maybe I just did not resonate with the emotions (or lack of), but the whole story felt odd in these last few chapters. I wish Jest had received more consideration.q burial or a emotional scene. It felt like there was no closure, and the last few chapters left me feeling a bit frustrated with the ending.

Graphic: Death
Odd pacing, did not grip me, the ending seemed rushed. Interesting use of classic characters.
