I‘m just as in love with this book as I was the first time I read it

The book took me a bit to get into but once I got into it I loved it. I got butterflies at the scenes where Jest and Cath got to be romantic. I smiled at their witty comments and his kindness towards her. I also cried with Jest’s death and part of me blamed Cath. She had been warned and yet she went to save a friend, who wasn’t even a friend anymore. I also hate her parents because now that they see her become hollow they finally seem to care. However, their want for rank has succeed over the kindness a parent should feel for their child, and only after Cath pulls away they question if being queen is what will make her happy. Have they not heard her at all... she never wanted to be a queen, but now she has no other choice but to be queen. She is the queen of hearts, but has no heart because Jest died and she gave her heart away for vengeance.

It’s good I wanted more from the ending but i always want/need more.

For being listed as appropriate for ages 12-17, I was surprised there was such a dark turn.
The story is good and entertaining, but be warned, there is no happy ending here.

2 1/2 stars

This book started off beautifully. I loved the food, and the characters, and the strangeness of the world. It went downhill from the time of the mockturtle. I found that I couldn't understand how Cath, sweet, irritating and indecisive as she was, could turn so far as to become the nasty Queen of Hearts. Not without the man she loved--Jest--betraying her, which he did not. While at the end she certainly did act like the Queen of Hearts, there was far too much of a gap between the two personalities, without seeing her character growth (shrinking) into that role. I still am a fan of Marissa Meyer, but this wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be.
