Was overall fairly indulgent, cheesy, and absurd. So why the 4 stars? I'm a steampunk/clockwork junky. Cassandra Clare is not a good author, but she does have a way of throwing in all sorts of candy for the Victorian inclined. A good point is Tessa, the main character, who is mostly a throwback to the heroines of period novels. But, like in the Infernal Mandie books by Lois Gladys Leppard, where the hay do all these "beautiful young men" come from? They're enough to turn your stomach. Give me Mr. Rochester :)

I enjoyed this book but I think it was very slow. Even after the final battle, I feel like I didn't learn much or feel very strongly towards any character but Tessa and Jem. If I didn't enjoy The Mortal Instruments so much I probably wouldn't continue on but I hear Will Herondale becomes amazing so I'm willing to give the next book a try.

Like The Mortal Instruments series did, this prequel series promises to give me the same thrills as a chocolate indulgence: It comes with the pleasure of instant gratification (i.e. fast-moving plots), the junk food guilt (someone nearing 30 really should be reading something more challenging and age-appropriate), and the sugar fix dependancy that tells me I'll still probably be coming back to it again.
