Oof. I don't know what to say about this book. I think tik tok lied to me though by highlighting all these romance tropes for this to underwhelm me the way it did. The only word that comes to mind to describe this book is "blah". I kept telling myself I was struggling to pick up the book because this is the first paperback I've read in over 2 years (ebook is supreme for the simple fact that I can highlight and it links right to goodreads, but that's my own personal opinion) but this book was just not a page turner, the relationship was not exciting, and the spice couldn't decide if it wanted to be vague/closed door or vague/open door.

Ruby is mid-late 30s (author never gives us exact age which is ironic since the main ongoing theme is how the FMC feels like she has lost her sense of identity) and yet she acts emotionally immature and makes immature decisions throughout the book
Spoiler 1. pinky swearing a secret to a virtual stranger and keeping it from your only two actual friends and justifying it bc they'll find out eventually. 2. Overstepping bounds by talking with Brochan's father. 3. back to that stranger.. calling her a bestie after one interaction, when she has an actual BFF back in the states 4. I could go on, but I'm annoyed rehashing it all.
. Ruby had barely any growth from the start to the end of the book. I think the author tried to make the third act breakup/miscommunication be more than it was and honestly it only made Ruby come across hypocritical. Her relationship with Brochan can't really be classified as friends to lovers, but maybe more of attraction finally acted upon? Also, in regards to trust going both ways... pot meet kettle, Brochan keeping a secret by omission on
Spoiler who his ex girlfriend was
.. not cool.

Now if you want to read this for the Scottish vibes, the author did a great job describing the locations, foods, and lifestyle that made you feel like the Cosy Hearth is a real place. This made even more sense after I read the author blurb that she is a foodie.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I really tried. I knew I wasn't going to like this or continue by chapter 3. It read like a high school writing experiment.
Roo and Broo?
giant eye roll. I found this book poorly written and boring. How do you make food and Scotland boring? While I didn't finish it, I did skip to the epilogue and it didn't inspire me to continue trying to get into it.

I give this one 3.5 stars.

Ruby Spencer is a delightful character, and I loved her impromptu move to Scotland to escape her NYC chaotic life, old boyfriends and a job she didn't love in order to dedicate a year to writing a cookbook. I loved all of the supporting characters. While the story started strong, there was a very definite drag about three-fourths of the way through that forced a rather abrupt ending.

Overall, a cute read.

sweet rom com about finding yourself and what home/family means

i’m glad i’ve read this book but i don’t think i’ll be reading again bc it’s more narrated than pov of the main character. either way, very well written and a good mix of gaelic every now and then too lol

I had a hard time with this one because I couldn't stand Ruby for most of this book. I thought she was taking a front-row seat in other people's business. I mean, she knew the major for all of two days, and she chose to keep her secret about the man she was sleeping with

Also, the breakup made no sense to me because I thought that it was apparent to everyone the identity of the other women; I mean, it seemed clear to me.

Considering how much anger Brochan had toward old love, I was surprised he was so willing to start a relationship with Ruby.

If you love a small-town Scottish story, you may love this and have different feelings for Ruby.

Hated it. Thin characters with a predictable plot and a Mary Sue main. Did not finish.
