The Cursed Friend was very much my sort of book. It reminded me a little of a novel by Niccolò Ammaniti called I'm not scared (well worth a read too). It's story set in Monza, in the 1930s when the Duce (a word I imagine isn't pronounced as douche but that's how I go with it - seems fitting) was a national hero, fascism was very much the thing and they were trying to colonise Ethiopia via a wee war Benito waged in 1937ish (not a success). Our protagonist is Francesca but the character we're interested in is Maddalena- the cursed one, who she befriends despite warnings that the wee pup is bad news. The wee pup is not bad news. They're two girls very much on opposite sides of the economic tracks, and the novel explores the hypocrisy of the church at that time, misogyny, the oppression inherent in a patriarchal society and the bravery along with tenacity needed to go against the crowd, the importance of words and standing up for what is right rather than what is easy. It does this all much more deftly than my synopsis suggests. It's easy to get into, paced well and offers a little portal to Monza in the 1930s. Also very much made me feel a little better about things that have been a source of contention lately, far better to be a Maddalena and shunned which is alas very much the boat we're sailing in. I'd have liked Anne Goldstein to have translated it, and to be fair it's not a bad translation but I absolutely don't think mom was the parlance used in Italy in the 1930s, but that's the only thing that clunks a dull note. Not many books make it to the keeper shelf, this one very much does. 5/5.

Gostei muito da experiência de leitura.
Desde o prólogo, que prende a atenção, às últimas palavras. Rapidamente me deixei levar pela crueza e pela ternura das personagens e das relações que se criam. Empatizei com elas, transportei-me para a época histórica, para o espaço, para os cheiros, para cada pedacinho da viagem por onde fui conduzida. Deixei-me tocar pela simplicidade das pequenas coisas que aqui me deixaram tantos nós na garganta ainda por desfazer.
Passando por vários temas fortes como a religião, a discriminação, orientações politicas, sexismo …. Em momento algum senti que a abordagem dos temas fosse forçada ou desnecessária. Tudo no lugar certo.
Percebo a analogia com a Amiga Genial, entendo o paralelismo feito, mas isso não retirou nem um pedacinho da boa experiência que tive.
Peca por ser curto, por não oferecer mais, pelo desfecho que não foi bem o que esperava.

que preciós omfg ❤️❤️❤️ m’ha encantat i esq bàsicament el resum és la relació increïble de les dues protagonistes. he vist moltes comparacions amb l’amiga genial i sí, suposo que si pero bàsicament pel fet que són dues amigues. la història boníssima però esq les dues protes tenen la relació més espontània real i bonica ❤️
