I loved every second of this book; the characters, the horrors, and the surprising love story tucked in there. Most of all I love how the author gave certain characters exactly what they truly deserved (you’ll know what I mean if you read it). I sincerely hope she writes another story in this universe, I want to really see what’s all the way down at the bottom of it all.

Rarely have I so thoroughly detested the experience of reading a book.

I really did want to like this book. I loved the idea and the concept was super cool, but I was just bored. It dragged on for way too long. It did have some cool parts and reveals, but there were so many characters and the POVs switched so randomly that I found it pretty hard to follow. I found myself just wanting the book to end. I think this book could have been amazing if it were about 150 pages shorter.

Into the drowning deep kept me on the edge of the seat. It was like a movie. However, I felt the ending was a little bit rushed.

Alright, firstly I want to appreciate how much research this took, the engaging premise, and detailed networking of characters. Also, caveat. This is my first sci-fi, so maybe I’m not the intended audience for this kind of approach.
What didn’t work for me: relentless commentary on each characters thoughts and feelings, backstory, etc. All. The. Time. Middle of an action scene? Flashback. Trying to move a conversation forward? Excess narration on someone’s reaction doubling the whole scene in length. I’m realizing very character driven suspense/thrillers are not my thing.
There also weren’t nearly enough mermaids. When we got sirens, they were magnificent. The writer knows how to write engaging and enthralling suspenseful moments. I wanted more!! Uninterrupted by a stupid character’s cheesy line or disruptive, dramatic. flashback.
The characters were all stupid for how smart they were.
Olivia: “do you think he drowned?”
No I think he probably died from the siren engulfing his whole face.
“What are they hunting?” Obviously you.
“What climbed up the side of the ship…” Obviously a siren.
“What are you doing out here?” They’re hunters and there are sirens on the ship Luis. They’re not there to spy on you.
The dialogue was a bit awkward at times, too long of a lull in the story about the characters drama, past hurt, and CONSTANT bickering. Seriously, everyone was really clueless. I couldn’t have cared less about who’s mad at who and for why.
I LOVED the few snippets from the sirens’ perspectives.
The ending was felt inauthentic, I would have rather there just been like a bunch of sirens without the big boss lady.
Three versus two stars because I was invested in seeing how the story panned out and didn’t feel like DNFing at any point.
