Where to begin with this review? First this is definitely not a book for all to read as it is a very difficult experience due to Delia AML (leukemia) dx and treatments and her honesty about what she experienced the very depths. For me to read it was painful deeply felt commiseration yet aware I can never fully know what she knew. Yes there is good here and this covers period of her life that began with the dying and death of her much loved husband Jerry and that culminated in 2017 then her re-meeting of Peter who was then psychiatrist Jungian analyst here in Bay Area he also a recent widower. The core of this period is from when she knew she had the same Leukemia blood disorder as her sister Nora who died.
The beauty of this time in her life is the love of Peter now her husband and very dear special friends and her connection to people in her building on 10th St NYC. She is a much loved woman... And of course the incredible MDs at Columbia Presbyterian Weil Cornell where she was treated and the final treatment was bone marrow transplant (fr a donor and an almost perfect match) and a related procedure related to a cord where donor is child's blood.
At the end Delia tells us how she was able to gather all the material from that period those years and it was thanks to her friend Julia who compiled all her writings about her life including her medical life from Delia phone and computer into 5 books. . Yet at some point probably in 2019 Delia who has always been a writer ("writing is a calling") has decided she will not write again. Again another beloved friend Eric engages with her into taking one of her books into the theatre ... and the rest is history
This is a very very special book and altho I returned it yesterday to my library it resonates...
