2.5 AVERAGE

I basically skimmed this whole novel. I was interested at the beginning, knowing how this was supposed to go, but the dialogue was so sparse and the characters were kind of harsh so I didn't really get into this book. I heard lots of hype and really good things, and this one just didn't live up to it for me. Plus I was in a rush, but I don't think that my opinion would change if I took it slower. No one really said much. And the rivalry between Valerie and Leah seemed strained and forced. Not my new favorite book, that's for sure. I do hope other people enjoy it though.

It is first-person, present-tense, but that didn't save it. I may try something by this author in the future though. Perhaps the writing will get better.

This book was just not my cup of tea at all. I felt like I was watching a movie and had missed the first ten minutes - there was never really any background or character development and I felt like all of the characters were pretty flat. I didn't like the love triangle/cheating deal and I never felt like I actually got into the story. Honestly, it felt like a waste of time to read when I could have found something much better.

1.5 FINALLY!! Gah, I thought I'd never finish this one

I was all set to give this a 2, but it redeemed itself slightly in the end. Mostly a 3 because I know I could recommend this to my students, and they would enjoy it and I'm all for anything that starts and keeps them reading.

I liked the story line but the characters had no depth.
challenging emotional

When I first decided to read this book, I thought I would be getting something great, that was not the case here. The book was never coherent enough for me to keep up with. I could never tell when I was in the present, or past. I couldn't even get to like the characters because of the way that the book was written. The story was a good idea, but it just was not strong enough for me.
Leah is going through life by living the same exact life her two older sisters did and their mother. She meets a boy and decides to take an adventure with him, but I don't even think you can count it as an adventure. She really is spending time with this boy she met at her country club. While she is spending time at the pool where she works, she is trying to decide what is really going on with her life. She is also being "annoyed" by the girl in her class who wants to beat her by becoming valedictorian and Leah is trying to figure out why the girl wants anything to do with her.
I really found this story lacking in more than one major part. I am on of those people who when I start a book I finish it. In this case I really had to force myself because it really was only 100 something pages and I figured it wouldn't take long.

I do not recommend this story to others. If you liked the story, good for you, but I honestly thought it needed more.

Do you want to know what pushed me to read this book?

The cover of course!

And unfortunately the contents of the book did not live up to the cool cover of the book. It was one of those books you’ll ask yourself why you bother reading. It seriously bored me out of my wits.

The connection between our two main characters was very weak. I didn’t feel the connection that I should have felt when they were together. It lacks emotion maybe I don’t know.

Leah has everything. She has the money, the brains and a cute boyfriend. What more could she ask for right? I would trade anything to be in her shoes but hey she doesn’t like it. Then, she starts to fall for this guy Porter (or Duffy) who she met at a country club.

Seriously, I don’t think I have anything else more to say about this book. I think I prefer that this book dealt with her family issues rather than her story with Porter. I think I would have liked it better if it just focused on her family. I thought this was supposed to be a romance novel. I was pretty disappointed that I didn’t get much of that as I was expecting.

This book has loads of potential but mostly lacking on characterization and the main plot. The writing was good but the story just fell flat to me.

Sorry. I really wanted to like this book.

I have to give it 2 stars
