Made it to chapter 10. Didn’t feel comfortable with the race references and now the AIDS stuff? Yeah I’ll pass.

An interesting post-apocalyptic scifi story. My only issue was the months and weeks the author skipped over throughout the novel, I think some could've been included to add more human or human-alien interactions and make the overall story even better.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. As far as post apocalyptic fiction goes it's as good as anything else I've read. Great characters and I enjoyed the few twists and turns along the way. Well written too.

One star for the only character i liked who the author wastefully killed. I paid 99 cents so I don't feel bad but I can't recommend this as the writing is average and tells a story that has been done better.

This was a pretty good, end of the world, type of story. I didn't see the "twist" coming until it happened.

The book could probably use some editing, but it was highly entertaining.

For an apocalyptic where the reader gets to see the devastation and destruction WHILE it is happening, this was a bit slow. Time moves really weirdly. One minute seems like forever and it is difficult to know how much time the characters go through. Months go by but there is no real indication of when or where it went.

The characters were quite brilliant though. I really enjoyed how they went about surviving. Even knowing that this is probably the apocalypse and getting their stuff together. It’s fabulous. It is also what would happen in the real world. The only downside was that it was difficult to tell the two main characters, Walt and Raymond, apart. So much so that it took me a minute when the story skipped back and forth at the beginning. This does fix itself as the story goes on, fortunately. Or maybe I just got more into the characters and could tell their own stories apart. Either way, it got better.

The narration was great for this. Ray Chase has a way of really inducing intensity into his voice. It’s entertaining and brings that intensity to portions of the plot that are not even that intense. Deep and gravelly, perfect for this type of story.

I loved the pop culture references and jokes. We would all do it. It’s a huge part of reducing stress for some. That or kill other people, I guess. I’d prefer telling jokes. Sometimes they went a bit too far but I was with the story enough at that point that it did not bother me too much.

The sci fi portion threw me though. There’s a twist that I did enjoy reading, but I needed a little more. Overall it was good, but not fabulous.

Wanted to love this book, since it's a prequel to the Rebel Stars series which, while not perfect, was pretty good.
Unfortunately, the characters (well, at least one of them) prevented that. Walt can't decide if he's a tragic manbaby unable to fend for himself because of society collapsing around him, or Rambo, combat-trained from birth to be the greatest warrior. Maybe occasional snippets of his internal monologue stating "i don't know what i'm doing" was supposed to be enough to subvert his general competency with all things combat and aliens, but it sure sounded like he was just saying that for the audience.

The book introduces a much better fleshed-out, one could even say "interesting" set of characters in Raymond and Mia, characters with personalities and depth beyond "im sad". Without going deep into spoiler territory, they are treated as secondary to Walt "Manbaby" Lawson, and I feel their arc is mishandled.

2/5, compelling story about societal collapse in the face of a plague and alien invasion, undermined by an unlikeable main character and questionable narrative decisions.

Strong start, but much weaker finish. Not bad entertainment for the price I paid. Was expecting more of a survivalist post pandemic story rather than an alien one, so that's what threw me for a loop. I was a bit put off by the fact that many of the characters were disposable and that Walt, the least likable character was the one who made it... I wasn't expecting Disney, but would have liked a more sympathetic character.
