The world's introduction to Hercule Poirot. It's difficult to imagine *this* book launching a character that would become so embedded in pop culture (when compared to other Poirot novels), but The Mysterious Affair at Styles must have wowed a Sherlock-hungry populace in the early 1920s as its deserved success led to Agatha Christie penning her even better Poirot mysteries such as Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.

This novel with its old-fashioned "locked room" premise and murder by poisoning bridged the transition from Edwardian crime fiction to Christie's more ingenuous and clever modern plots. I enjoyed it far more upon this reread than I recall previously.

Christie was clearly already allowing herself to have some fun, particularly with Poirot, and the book is all the better for it! It also includes many great Poirot-isms for the aspiring sleuth ("If the fact will not fit the theory - let the theory go") and an ingenious twist-laden plot that only a master detective - or a master mystery novelist - could deduce.

From his first major moments, Poirot is brilliantly memorable and, on its own merits, The Mysterious Affair at Styles is certainly readable and engaging... but judged from its eventual literary impact, the world has it to thank for one of mystery fiction's greatest characters.

Perfectly mid. Nothing particularly outstanding but it's understandable as this is the first building block in Christie's legacy and the whodunit standard.

Favorite Quotes:

"Blood tells--always remember that--blood tells."

“You gave too much rein to your imagination. Imagination is a good servant, and a bad master. The simplest explanation is always the most likely.”

“Every murderer is probably somebody’s old friend,” observed Poirot philosophically. “You cannot mix up sentiment and reason.”

Not a bad version of a classic Christie story, zips along at a decent pace - a palate cleanser!
