I loved this book. The first half was perfectly amazing. The last half was amazing as well, but a little cheesy and predictable. That doesn’t make a book bad though, this was a really amazing book. It makes the reader look at the differences between right snd wrong and dissect the definitions of justice and vengeance. It’s fiction, but so many women can relate to the emotions flowing through this book which is what made it so amazing. It’s not too graphic, since it’s y/a and the characters are high school characters, but it is really emotional so check trigger warnings.

The Black Coats was perfectly entertaining while I was reading but it didn't hold up to scrutiny once I had some time to think about it a bit more. A lot of the story is very surface level -- there isn't much character development and the core question of justice vs. vengeance gets a very quick, trite answer. The plot requires a heavy suspension of disbelief, which I'm actually okay with, but it would've benefitted from being anchored to something else in the story whether that was a development of Mademoiselle Corday as a setting or more focus on making the members of Team Banner feel like unique people.

The premise of this book was great, but it turned out to be an average read. I did like it though. I just feel like it had the potential to be more. I do love that this book is very female-driven.
