I may try again later, the book is beautifully written but with all the intense content around child abuse, kidnapping, and infant loss, I just couldn’t keep going. I was not compelled enough to push through at this time.

I chose to listen to this book as it was on a "great on audio list."  I've heard better narrations, but the story was great.  I think I'd have liked it even better in print.

This book definitely dragged at times which is such a shame because I loved the overall concept and some of the passages had incredibly strong writing. The "twist" of the book is immediately revealed and the story takes the reader through what happened to the end that is hinted at in the beginning of the story. I loved this conceptually and I feel like it actually made dual POV work for me for once. Unfortunately several of the Joe chapters felt like they should've been cut or gone through another round of edits in my opinion. The Norma chapters were all strong and I loved her story, it hit home a lot for me as someone finding my biological family. Overall I will definitely read anything else Peters publishes but I will not be recommending this to everyone I meet.

Extremely heavy and sad sad book. Not much of a mystery or thriller so don’t know why it’s been labeled as such. Beyond the event where Ruthie gets taken (it’s right there in the blurb) there is no mystery to be solved. Definitely more of a family trauma saga.

I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narration of Aaliya Warbus and Jordan Waunch. This is a very slow-paced book with a focus on character vignettes and development. I didn’t think the “reveal” was particularly shocking or riveting because I had guessed it pretty early on. However, knowing the major spoiler framed my reading experience in witnessing one of the character’s suspicions and overall complicated feelings.  This book takes place over the span of 50+ years & you’re given two main characters’ first-person POVs through rotating chapters. Though it was a bit predictable, I enjoyed the characters’ voices and journeys so I would try another book by this author in the future.
