I know I’m late in coming to these Silas House novels, but wow are they gorgeous.
Silas House is a painter and a poet. His characters never seem forged or forced, they exist completely.
Not my favorite of House's novels, but well-written and totally worth reading.

really beautiful story of sisterhood interwoven with the beauty/power/knowledge/heritage/omnipotence of the Appalachian mountains. Read half of it and listened to the other half while working in said mountains— driving through the land I was listening to stories about really added to this books impact for me.

great story about coal mining and family dynamics. House's writing makes you feel the environment he is describing.
Story of two sisters living in Appalachia. I loved the different strengths showed by both of the women and the way the author shows a people's relation to the land. Also the focus on "this land is your land" at the end was touching.
I really liked his personal writing style and characters. I also enjoyed the glimpse of life in the Eastern Kentucky region, which I'm sure closely resembles my grandparents' lives close to this time. I found the relationship between the sisters very interesting.
