Half way through the mammoth malazan book of the fallen and yet to experience a less than stellar effort.

This one in particular, which shall henceforth be referred to as "The one with the seals", is probably not many people's favourite as you're basically starting from scratch in respect of the characters and setting, but there is once again so much to like, including the marvellous comedy duo of Tehol and Bugg.

Erikson is the perfect tonic for anyone who is bored of the more derivative fantasy narratives and tired tropes.

slow-paced

Act 1 of this book started off really slowly, and while the characters were interesting and enough to keep me somewhat engaged, plot wise not much happened. Once I got to Act 2 things started picking up and just keep running from there, and it kept my attention all the way to the end!

Excellent! What more can I say about Erikson apart from great writing, engaging characters and epic storylines.

Superb! Another stunning take in the Malazan Book of the Fallen. Epic and yet filled with characters that are grappling with life in the midst of magic, faith, family and war. Tragic and yet hopeful in the same breath. Fantasy as it should be written for fans who want more than hack and slash pulp.
