Juliet Stevenson read this book to me. She is fantastic. I swear she could read the phone book and bring each character to life. This is a sweet read. Wholesome, goodhearted characters that you can't help but like. What else can you say, it's Jane Austen.

Emma by Jane Austen - review

3⭐️

For the bookclub the reading room from @cheshirewaffles I read Emma. Tho I was supposed to finish the book last month, I have been stalling, because I just wasn’t in the mood. I also listened to the audiobook, so that might have caused some delay too, because I don’t listen to audiobooks that often 😅.

Emma is about Emma Woodhouse. She is a bratty, spoiled girl. She is very vain and selfish. Because of this she stumbles from the one catastrophe into the other, while trying to secure her friend Harriet a husband. But this does not go as she planned. Further she also meddles in the relationship of Jane and Frank, before ultimately falling into her own unexpected happy ending.

The vibes of regency England are just amazing. I love the time and travelling back in time to a time of ball gowns, marriage and family names. And especially the funny and witty take of Jane Austen makes it even better.

I loved the prose in this book, it is just written so beautifully just as in Pride and Prejudice. The social commentary and the wit of Jane Austen are just amazing to read. And it is so fun to get an inside on the satire of the past. Just hilarious.

Emma is such a complicated character. In the beginning I found her quite annoying to be honest. She is so bratty, spoiled and a little dump at times. And it does make her a bit hard to like in the beginning, however I did notice her grow on me. And her comments are just soo funny and hilarious. She is so stubborn but has this great wit and such a sharp tongue.

I did think there were so many characters that it sometimes got a bit confusing who is who and who likes who and have relationships 😅, but that might also be my ant brain that is just the worst with character names 🤣.

Now I really want to watch the movie because I just love classic movies and I really want to read more classics, but need to be in the mood for them. Forcing myself through I noticed does not really do it justice, since I have literally forgotten almost everything that has happened already 😅🫣.

Not my favorite of her books I've read. The length certainly didn't help. It didn't hook me until the second volume when more characters were introduced. Emma's actions at times are reprehensible, but I did like her as a protagonist.

I had a great time listening to Emma as an audio book. I think I would've lost steam if I had seen the actual length and number of pages, but on audio it was great. I thought it was very funny and didn't know that Clueless was an adaptation of Emma until I saw someone else say so. Luckily I was near the end of the book and so I saw the parallels in plot that were very interesting because of the subtelness in similarities. Emma certainly had some ideas that would've been frowned upon today but she grows into a more accepting person who is less conceited by the end. Jane Austen writes the antagonists so well in each of the books I've read from her, that I always end up feeling very annoyed by them that I just want them to shut up! I thought all the characters were interesting and it was funny how Mrs. Elton and Emma are very similar in how they choose someone to be their "project" to transform and shape their lives. Mrs Elton doesn't, however, have the better qualities in Emma to balance out her negative ones. It was also very interesting to see how vital social status was for marriage back in those days, that everyone thought about it so much. I think it's also a warning to not be blind to people's real intentions, seeing only what you want to in them.
Emma is surprised by Elton's admiration of her, Harriet doesn't see how Emma manipulates her, Jane lets Mrs Elton boss her around and constrict her.
