There are very few books that i would say everyone should read, but The Last Unicorn is certainly among the best of them.

Took a little bit for me to get into, but once I did, oh man, it lived up to my every expectation.

A whimsical and wondrous story abt finding purpose and knowing yourself despite misrecognition. I rented the movie an annoying amount of times from blockbuster and it means even more to me now that I'm older. The book and movie stay true to each other, but this delves more into the other characters which I love. This book is so well written and holds so much meaning, anyway you look at it, you will find the story you need to hear.

Highly recommend pairing it with August Clarke's essay "Queer Visibility & Coding in The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle," it beautifully explains the trans parallels in the story. I love queering a story that has meant so much to me since childhood.

the hold lapsed. i was reading other stuff

Like many others, I grew up watching this movie and was 47 years old before I realized it was based on a book. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this read like a beautiful and confusing fever dream for me. I was torn on how many stars to give, but several days after finishing this book, I am still thinking about it, and yearning to catch just one glimpse of my unicorn again.
