DID NOT FINISH: 30%

I just couldn’t get into the characters. It could have possibly been because I had just read the first 4 books of Jenny Colgan Mure series and was loving all those characters and it was surprising when this book is the next in the series but had a whole new cast of characters. I might pick it back up at some point and see if I have a different experience.

jenny colgan manages to write these incredibly cute books set in the most charming of places. while i liked the sequel (close knit) a lot more, as it plays a lot more into the small town life and the scenery of the area (small scottish northern islands), i did also enjoy this a lot. it had some classic romance tropes, but used them very well. it doesn't stand out in the romance genre as much as close knit does, but it's a charming story in it's own right. if you're looking more for a classic romance with some cheesy tropes, set in the scottish northern isles & featuring a strongheaded pilot and a reclusive grumpy but kind man, definitely pick this up.

p.s. the food descriptions in this book are TO DIE FOR. every food is described so deliciously, i could almost smell it. made me very very hungry.

For me, this is all about the landscape and the creation of sensory experience. Jenny Colgan is a master at completely immersing readers in the worlds of her characters. Finishing this book was like ending a vacation in an area of natural beauty and not wanting to go. I give this 5 stars despite feeling that the plot was thin. It felt secondary to the experience of visiting the characters’ world.

Well done and fairly riveting in the realm of light realistic romantic fiction. Not in the common way!
