I struggle to get going with Gibson's books but they ramp up and then wrap up.
A worthy follow-up. More thought provoking than the first, esp. regarding issues of class, religion, and humanness. But the three-pronged narrative approach yields thinner characters than in Neuromancer. Oh well. The ideas are richer.
Simpler than Neuromancer, but with more loose threads by the end of it.
Does some interesting things with semiotics, myths, and technology, but the characters are generally weak and the ending felt deflated.
2.5 - right down the middle for me. Found the colloquialisms jarring and the three plots unengaging, but some interesting world bits throughout.
Solid Gibson, as ever. Not Neuromancer, but not bad because of that. Bring on MLO...

More 3 1/2 stars really, a very interesting read indeed, like Dashiell Hammett wrote high tech thrillers - the sparse hardboiled prose really suits Gibson's prose. However at times the slang made it a touch hard to follow at times, and I really wanted more development of Gibson's cyberspace 'matrix.'
Obviously being from 1986 the book has dated a bit, mobile phones being the main elephant in the computer. Apart from that though fascinating stuff and when opportunity permits, a reading of Neuromancer is definitely called for.

Very good. Reads like Sci-fi noir, and I’m all for that
Little weaker than Neuromancer, though. Slower start for sure. See my Neuromancer review for everything this book does right.
