It took me longer to get into this one than Neuromancer – the fact that a third of it focused on an obnoxious script kiddie was a big part of this – but I enjoyed it more. The characters were more interesting to me as was the broader scope of their interaction with the world. The blending of Vodou belief with the science fiction worked better than I would have thought were I to just read a description of the story, but Gibson does a good job with making it into something I could take seriously.

First re-read after 20 years (this time I got the original text, not a translation). I still found it immensely enjoyable - obviously I couldn't discard the nostalgic overtones, not that I wanted to -, especially the gorgeously crafted prose and even the neon-tinted, rusty future-that-will-never-be fascinated me.
A mercenary is hired to help a scientist defect from Maas biolabs, a woman is hired by Josef Virek to track down the artist of a box, and a first-timer manages to get tangled up in something much bigger than the matrix he was hoping to crack into. Their stories get closer and closer until they combine.
Much easier to understand than the first book with characters with motivations that are more sympathetic. But the ending wasn’t as engaging as the first as the stakes were not fully explained.
