This one had a good plot but it took about 25% of the story before things started happening. So- a slow 25% where we rehashed how we got to this current place. Solid story once it got moving, maybe at 40%? 3.5 stars for me. I may be losing interest or am just jones'ing for Stardew Valley, we will see.

We see the Dallas pack fall apart and Fenris told to play nice with Jacky. Hasan is giving them grief over their relationship and witches try to take over the world.

I took a break with this series because I found out that Sorcha dies and I didn't want to read that because I like her a lot. Anyway, I got KU and picked this up again. KN Banet is VERY good with writing strong, interesting, and distinct characters. I absolutely loved this installment. Has the Jacky Leon series always been so good? It's almost addictive. I couldn't stop reading and immediately downloaded the next book.

Oh man, I loved it so much that I'm torn between immediately re-reading it, and immediately re-reading the whole series so far. Aiiiiieeeee!

Re-read April 2023
It was interesting reading this book after Secrets & Ruin.
SpoilerI was looking for glimpses of Fenris's double life, but I didn't really see anything firm aside from the one that was obvious on first read (when he said Fenris isn't his name, and seemed to take on a whole different personality and way of speaking). I think that tracks, though, because Brin also gave no glimpses of a double life - these fae magic split-personality things seem to be iron clad until something triggers them to break. So this re-read just ended up being sad - Fenris with PTSD, but trying to be reasonable, trying to get past it. It hurt my heart a little.

I love the growth!!

The two characters, rather, this chosen family, is growing by leaps and bounds. In the last few installments, Jackie had been the main focus - and how she had changed. Heath has always been there, but it’s been her story. This one takes a slight detour, bringing his destiny more into focus - is still about her really, but you see the importance this shifter plays, and how he has changed…. And boy has he changed since Dallas. I wouldn’t be surprised it’s he ends up stronger than all of them, just for circumstances and need! It’s a great arch, with potential aplenty, from her family to the humans that are clawing their way into the scene. I can’t wait to see what happens!

LOVE this series!

Jacky Leon is who I want to be when I grow up. She is brave, loyal to those she loves, rebels against the injustice of all kinds of supernatural & humans, knows how to hold herself high and when it’s time to accept help. This urban fantasy style series is reason I got hooked back into reading 20+ yrs ago. If you have not read this series, but love a great urban fantasy story with lots of twists, turns and great characters you need to give this a try. (F.T.B but I love it)
