Found this book in a bus, with it's discount sticker tattered and halfway peeled of. While I reached my stop it took my interest as it was repetitively well written, also I was bored and had to fill time with something.
Later that evening when I resumed reading it it dawned on me that I don't really know what I've got myself into: is it a over-the-top thriller about a tough cop who plays it loose and fast, reminiscent of 80's movies. Or was it a smart satire of this kind of books, filled with deliberate inconsistencies, absurdities and slapstick moments. I was ready to believe that it might even be some kind of bizarre thought experiment, where every character in this story was switched with 10 year-old kids, or that it was told by one and author filled the gaps and dressed up as it's own.
I mean even the possibility of it was hard to believe, but there had to be some kind of explanation behind it.
Ultimately, as the book marched on to it's end, as author used up all the gimmicks, as there were no more cliches to repeat and there were no grand revelation, it became painfully aware that the joke was on me.
At least I didn't pay for it....

Man I love heck, this wasn't as gruesome as Stalkers but still got me incredibly hooked and unable to sleep without finishing a chapter or 5

I like the vocabulary and attention to detail, I think the environment and atmosphere was described very well albeit the same attention to detail describing the deserved fates of some people were rather gory and hard to stomach more so when described for what were sometimes almost half a page. Though, I do find a certain level of satisfaction knowing that bad people have horrible gruesome ends. I did think the storyline was stretched out a bit too long, like a wild goose chase before reaching a somewhat satisfying semi-conclusion, implying the intention to carry on in another book. I also found myself going from anticipation to impatience when certain high-tension or fight scenes were described. I do appreciate the topic at hand and social commentary towards politically charged crime gangs and internal politics of law enforcement that more often than not, meddles with the operations instead of giving way for effective procedure
Graphic: Gun violence and Gore

Excellent page turner. Heckenburg is a loon with his heart in the right place.

The third book in a highly enjoyable series so far though this had more police politics than nasty crime, more about the chase and procedure than about the atrocities committed by the bad guys.
Heck once again proves to be fallible but indestructible and is always several steps ahead of the rest of the crime fighting forces. Looking forward to the next in the series.
The Narrator, Paul Thornley, gives an excellent performance throughout and brings the characters to life.

I loved it. Although the beginning few pages were quite slow, from mid-end I was gripped. Very enjoyable read.
