We Were Liars was nothing like I expected. The first huge chunk of the book I fought the urge to skim and skip to the "good part" which I was so sure would come. It did not. There was a surprising twist near the end. Cady came to terms with things and had some character development, but I can't say I liked her, or really any of her family. The vivid descriptions of her headaches were beautiful, the poetry style and the fairytales were a nice touch, so stars for that. I've seen people saying they re-read it to piece together details they missed, and while I was confused for most of the book, it is not good enough to re-read imo.

I got only halfway through the book and it is not appropriate for ages under 14. I heard that the farther you go the more inappropriate it gets.

It was a good book overall and i would recommend it.
I read while i was kind of in a reading slump so this maybe isn’t the best review but…..
Great book. Writing style was okay.
I found it a nice book but sometimes it did was a lil bit boring like when she was all over gat and things like that they did have nice and entertaining moments togheter they definitely did but it was a little boring to read 3 pages long only abt him and at first it also was very hard to remember all the carachters wich also doesn’t get that better trough the book.
At the ending i was just quiet for an hour straight
This may seem like a bad review but
review but i would still reccomend it

Idk man, this book is severely overhyped. I cry more over doctor's appointments and stubbed toes than I did over the "legendary plot twist" that this book holds. For a much, much better use of this trope I recommend 'Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone'.

The first half of the book I had no clue what was going on or what the plot was. But around halfway I got it and I couldn't put it down. The ending was unexpected, not sure if I liked it but it was good

After reading some reviews, I understand why some people would not like this, but I had a great time reading it so a 4 it is. The best way to tackle this book is to go in completely blind and let the story unfold for you. The writing style in some places might annoy some readers; however, I enjoyed certain sections' descriptive language and jarring style changes. It might feel a bit overdramatic, but the main character is a teenage girl who comes from an affluent, appearance-based background and had something traumatic happen in her past. To me, the language fits Cadence. When I first started, I thought this was going to be a book rehashing overdone notes of materiality, classicism, status, appearances, and family secrets with a stereotypical WASP-y cast, but, as the story unfolded, it took these aspects and layered some cryptic elements ensconced by Cadence's memory loss and the family's attempts at maintaining their air of normalcy. The twist definitely got me when it revealed itself fully.  I am certainly going to reread this at some point based on how the ending panned out to see if I can experience certain interactions in a new light. (I was hoping for two characters to overcome external issues and maybe change the family for the better, but alas.)

For this particular copy of the book, the author included some bonus content (Gat's poems and notes to Cadence, an original map and family tree, the process of writing this book, and a book club menu and reading guide) which helped expand some aspects of the book and allowed the readers to see kind of what the author wanted to do with this particular storyline.
