Wayyy better than I anticipated. After being traumatized by the film, I was skeptical of this book and read it just so I could get rid of it but it was so good. The book does a way better job of separating true and false, and the narrations were great.

Okay, I like everyone else in the free world had heard of Gone Girl before, so politely, I thought I was going to be a bit bored by the plot. But this book DID NOT DISAPPOINT. This was the most twisted and wild read I have had, and I lived for every second of it.
First of all, I love books that punish the cheaters because usually they deserve it and it feels very cathartic. Because of this, the first part of the book felt good in like a twisted way. Then you realize the extent to which this woman is going to punish, and you're like "~yikes~ I think he gets it Amy."
However, Amy is one of the most compelling characters to read. She's arguably very funny, and a reader can see why she draws people in. Additionally, I adore that she points out every time she uses "and me" correctly. I love the insight to her mind and that she lays out her plan, and you do feel real sympathy for her. I don't think this novel would work as well if the reader did not simultaneously hate and empathize with both characters for the majority of the novel.
This novel also hides an important message on expectations of others and of ourselves. It has an anti-perfection thesis that underlies the plot. The reader can see that perfectionism kills Nick and Amy's marriage and leads to both of their personal downfalls.
Basically, I love this book. I texted my friend in all caps at the very end as I was so startled with the plot and the ending.

I will be thinking about this book for a while. I saw the movie in theaters and remember all the feelings I had then. I feel the movie is very accurate to the book. The whole time I was thinking “I wish I could read this blindly” because I know these plot twists would be so good. I love the unreliable narrators. I love super flawed characters. I love the satire and critique for men/women dynamics, true crime in media, and so much more. There is so much to analyze I wish I was reading this with somebody to talk it out. Amazing book, can’t wait to read more from the author.

I would do the same thing if a man dulled my sparkle!

In all seriousness I thought the plot and character development was very smart and engaging. The only thing better than one unreliable narrator is two! My main critique was pacing; the book was so long I felt like it dragged at points before Nick discovered Amy’s plan. But very happy the cat didn’t die <3
