the first chunk of chapters are a bit hard to get through because they’re a bit slow, but the rest of the story makes up for it. the characterisation, their relationships, and the general plot are executed with such detail that it captivated me for hours on end. a solid recommendation, and i’m glad that i pushed past those first few chapters.

Loved every page. Totally enthralling from start to finish, a wonderful, original story written masterfully. All of the characters felt very fleshed out. Immediately went out to get the next book once I was finished.

(I’ll warn you before the spoilers come up) Absolutely fell head over heels for this book. I’ll admit, I was a bit skeptical when I first picked it up because I haven’t read fantasy in years, and when I did it was only dystopian novels. Despite having little to no experience with it, I found it very easy to get in to after maybe the first 100 pages. This is my first book of the series so I can’t attest to which you should read first but I don’t think you’ll be completely lost without reading Shadow and Bone first. My only critique of this otherwise flawless book, is the complex world building and slowness at the beginning but it’s 100% worth it. OKAY IM GONNA DO THE SPOILERS NOW, STOP HERE IF YOU DONT WANT IT SPOILED

Okay so prior to reading this book, I saw a lotttt about Kaz and Inej but no one prepared me for Nina and Mathias!!!! I was absolutely obsessed with their dynamic. It’s very much enemies to lovers but add the fact that they’re enemies that would do anything to save each other. Also, when Mathias said the Fjerdan army initiation to her (The oath about being born to protect it, only death will stop that promise), I looooooost it. Definitely going to be one of my favourite books of all time. I do have to say though, I wish Kaz and Inej were a little bit less slow burn. Also, the mercher double crossing them was predictable in my opinion but still amazing nonetheless.
