Easily read in one sitting, this is a long short story more than a novel or novella. Written in 1989, it depicts a repressive patriarch and the impact his abuse has on his family. There are four main characters, all unnamed: a mother, father, and two children. The story is narrated by the daughter: at first, the family seems like a contented unit, but very quickly the cracks in the relationships show. I admired the author's tightly-controlled narrative, and the way she gradually reveals how poisonous the father is, without directly describing him as such. His controlling nature has succeeded in exerting power over the minds of his immediate family, and they struggle to break free and see him as he really is. The author captures this control in a subtle and powerful way: the narrative is gripping and compelling. But the prose is strange: it loops back and forth, and uses many repetitions in a way that can make it seem too dense or overwritten. There's a lot going on here, and it's worth reading, but it's not a light or pleasant read.

Claustrophobic one-sitting read about a family terrorized by a despotic father (also, a metaphor). I think I understood the function of the repetition but I also found it a little irritating at first—then the book became somewhat hypnotic and I got over that.
