This book was gorgeous. (Great audiobook too.) The anthropomorphic characteristics of the house really set the scene. I saw this described as "horror" but I don't know that I'd agree, although there were certain sentences that gave me goosebumps. A better description would be a Tragedy, in the classical sense.

I think I would have liked some greater depths in characterization - specifically with
Sana's parents, who seemed almost 2-dimensional. I also didn't feel that I understood why the djinn was so connected to Meena.
This would have enhanced the story for me. Even so, I really enjoyed it.

That messed me UP. Oh my god. Just heartbreaking. I just want everyone to be okay and NO ONE IS OKAY. I feel hopeful for Sana at the end but it's all just. So much.

Because of the title my brain had CONVINCED me this book was fantasy so I definitely went into this book with some weird expectations, but this story blew me away. The intergenerational trauma, the DELICIOUSLY atmospheric setting, the vividly chaotic and messy characters, I was completely enthralled the whole time. The reflections on Indian emigrates to South Africa was fascinating and everything regarding the house was so, so, so compelling. My only gripe was that the pacing in the beginning was a little stilted and slow to start, but overall this was everything I wanted from A Study in Drowning so I HIGHLY recommend for people who were looking for more from Study in Drowning.

I appreciated being pulled into a world I didn't know much about, but I also didn't expect this to be as dark as it was, and I really wasn't in the mood for that. Knowing something terrible was going to happen for 75% of the book was rough.
