Julius I love you

A fairly well written gay romance/porn that follows the familiar arc of
tension-fulfillment-falling out making up-external danger- happy ending
. In fact, all three books are that way. The attention to detail - descriptions of dress, societal norms and the language of the time - makes it quite a pleasant read, as do the elements of society intrigue and thriller. I am pleasantly surprised. My last effort at a romance novel had been in 2007 when it was read out aloud for a lark. I feel naive and narrow-minded for having assumed that all novels in the genre would include hilarious descriptions such as 'the flower of femininity'. Buggery I can get behind of (ha).

I love historical romance, but usually hate it in M/M, due to constraints of the time. K. J. Charles is one of the few authors who can actually make me buy the HEA.

This book was a bit slow to start for me, but once it grabbed me, it never let me go. I loved that the tropes were flipped a bit, with the younger Harry being the one to teach the more worldly, cynical Julius all about the gay sex, as well as about love.

At this point I am truly ride or die for KJ Charles because even though this was her weakest book yet that I've read, it was still such a worthwhile read. She knows how to write strong characters and play them off a well-researched historical setting, with romance and intrigue thrown into the mix. I think she tried to do a bit too much here, so that neither the romance nor the poltical plot felt fully developed. It felt like we were missing a few key intimate scenes between Julius and Harry and Harry's ambivalence towards the aristocracy and the revolutionaries was not fully resolved before everything got wrapped up with a bow at the end.
