It's... fine. Waid, of course, knows what he's doing. But I prefer my Daredevil to be Bendis or Miller dark rather than whizz bang 50s homage.

It's good to see Daredevil/Matt Murdock have some fun again. Solid writing by Mark Waid (as usual) and beautiful art by Paolo Rivera

Although I wasn't blown away by it, I really enjoyed Mark Waid's first Daredevil story arc. He had a tough tradition to follow with outstanding runs by Miller, Bendis and Brubaker. I think that one of the reasons that Waid's work has captured readers hearts is that it's lighter, but not too campy or fluffy, like some comics end up. Waid is quoted as saying that he was interested in "tweaking the adventure-to-depression ratio a bit and letting Matt win again," and he definitely succeeds at this. Waid also succeeds in playing both sides of the new happy-go-lucky Matt Murdock, because he highlights the fun and the adventure, while also setting up his run to explore Matt/Daredevil's need to make a conscious effort to be optimistic and fight darker impulses. I read a lot of dark and gritty comics, and I love them, but I'm glad to be able to add Waid's run to my list of fun, but still substantive, comics to read.

Daredevil has just never appealed to me as much as the other Marvel characters (aside from Captain America who I find just plain dull - sorry). This story was interesting. The plot went in unexpected places. But for a volume 1, it hinted at issues with Captain America and then dropped them, almost as if they were only there to fill pages. Foggy is a great character and I would love to see more with him. I wanted more development of Matt as a character. He felt pretty flat as a character. I was told, rather than shown, that he is putting on a happy-go-lucky front to hide his emotions. Overall, the story kept me interested, but the rest of it was just average.

I did enjoy it but I don’t think I’ll be picking more of Daredevil anytime soon
