The fact that the entries were written in standard english, without any spelling mistakes, disturbed me at the beginning. But the overall book was amazing.

I loved it. The power of the written word to heal is undeniable. The writing is honest, and it has the stamp of youth, and I can tell these entries were written painstakingly by a lot of kids with limited writing experience. I imagine the first drafts were much richer in local vernacular, and less structured. I can see the effort and work they put into editing and shaping each story to read more smoothly while maintaining the truths they were trying to convey. It's a simple book with deep layers.

First of all, I have to say that the very real stories in this book touched me deeply, sometimes I was reading and recognizing myself in the pages. Why only 3 stars? Among a lot of things that this book brought me, it also taught me that diary style books aren't really my thing, making it harder for me to read. Nevertheless, it was enlightening and a reading I would recommend.

I watched the movie in my English class and was truly moved by it. Such a powerful cause and I'm glad I read the book to get more of an insight into these kids' lives.
*Diary 66 is an entry that truly stuck out to me

Inspiring tale of "at-risk" teens who succeed through writing and the guidance of an idealistic teacher who won't accept defeat. The stories do become repetitious after a while.
