This was super cute and exactly what I wanted. I’m a huge academic and I write books and I love romance and romance books, so naturally this book was a perfect fit for me.
I think the choice of setting this book over one day was really interesting and fun, and with the whole graduating and senior game thing it made sense that all this would happen in one day.
The main characters were super cute and had great chemistry, I loved seeing them slowly get to know each other and discover how well they fit together (or I guess not so slowly in their time, but slowly in my reading time if that makes sense).
I liked the discussion about romance novels, what they mean to women, and how they’re constantly belittled. I’m definitely guilty of calling them ‘trashy’ or ‘silly’ in a subconscious attempt to not seem shallow or unintelligent, when really what is more deep, profound, and complex than love and the human experience? I like writing novels and I feel confident about creating fantasy, mystery, historical, etc. stories, but a pure and simple romance novel seems impossible. I’ll never understand how these authors can hold my attention for 300+ pages with nothing but a pair of characters going through normal human things. It’s truely a feat.
I do have to brag that I guessed that plot twist about as early as I possibly could have, but it didn’t ruin anything for me, only built anticipation :)
I really enjoyed this and ate it up in 2 days. Highly recommend.

Cute contemporary teen romance.
Moderate: Sexual content
Minor: Antisemitism
I’ve been reading a lot of galley books lately-mostly adult contemporary romance-and needed a break. I love Rachel Lynn Solomon (Business or Pleasure is an all time fav) and this had been sitting in my TBR list for ages. So glad I read it. Such a refreshing departure from my most recent reads, not to mention one of the best YA books I’ve read in ages.
I appreciate that none of this felt toned down or cheesy, in the way that many YA romantic novels can. Both Rowan and Neil were well-constructed, thoughtful characters rather than carictures of teenagers. This reminded me of a slightly nerdier, much better-written Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. (I do genuinely wish I could have played Howl when I was young enough to run around, adventuring until the wee hours of the morning.)
Immediately bought the sequel to read this evening. In fact, I think it’s time to go back and read this author’s full back catalog because I’ve enjoyed every single one of her books.

I LOVE a quick, cheesy romance and this is exactly that. Neil and Rowan go from rivals, to friends, to lovers in about 24 hours. They both realize after four years of competing against each other academically that they have a whole lot more in common than either of them knew.
