NEIL MCNAIR THE MAN THAT YOU ARE. I was twirling my hair and kicking my feet when I read what he wrote in her yearbook. But other than Neil, the book was really fun to read and I like the entire premise of the “Howl” game. One thing that slightly bothered me was when one of Rowan’s friend said that they “liked Harry styles” and said it like it was something to be ashamed of?? Girl what. But other than that one sentence loved the book !

the best way i can describe this book is that it's like a disney channel movie. no, not high school musical, but a debby ryan dcom and also like girl meets world: cringey, cliche, but so bad it's funny.
our main character rowan is annoying. newsflash: you're not the only person in the world who reads romance books. she mentioned quite literally every 5 minutes that she was writing a romance book or that she reads them, and that she's embarrassed by that? she also got mad at her friend for going on a 2 week vacation during summer break because she wanted to spend every minute with them. like....talk about a possessive and toxic friendship...
neil, our male main character, was okay? he calls rowan R2 and that gave me the ick.
the author also made the messages VERY clear. (ex. romance books shouldn't be something to be embarrassed about!, etc. etc.) like DUH. i obviously agree with the points she was making, but it was evident that she was trying so hard to make as many social issues mentioned that it felt forced and was told and not shown.
the main characters, seeing as this takes place on the last day of high school, it felt like they were peaking. rowan literally goes back to school that day to return her library books and she got all sentimental ("this doesn't even feel like my school anymore :( ") IT'S BEEN LESS THAN 5 HOURS GIRL.
also a girl admitted (with shame) that she liked harry styles? do not bring him into this.
the romance was kind of cute? overall it was a fast read and i was sorta entertained.

“My favourite books got happily-ever-afters—why couldn’t I?”
This was a cute but sort of middle-of-the-road read for me. The premise of the story was a lot of fun—I love how it all happens in 24 hours, and the city-wide scavenger hunt made me really miss...something. High school? Social interaction? I'm not sure haha, but it did get me hyped up. I was very intrigued by how this story was placed on the last day of senior year, and that nostalgic end-of-an-era feeling that comes with saying goodbye to high school was very present, along with the author's and characters' clear love for Seattle.
I had a bit of a hard time really connecting with Rowan; while I understood her on a surface level—her overachiever nature, her love for romance books—she just felt a bit distant for me, and I found it hard to sympathize with her at times, especially with the way she sometimes lashed out at the people who care for her. I did like Neil though and appreciated how layered his character was; I wish he'd gotten his own POV, as I feel like it would've been more interesting to see part of the story through his eyes instead.
Considering the 24-hour thing, I thought the rivals-to-friends-to-lovers dynamic was developed relatively convincingly, if a bit fast still. Overall, this was a cute cheesy YA romance, and I really liked the way the story wrapped up in the end.
super cute!!!
definitely related to the “just graduated high school” narrative. never thought nerdy gingers could be cute
