“He loved people being messy as fuck — he said it was one of the best things about being human, how we could make such disasters and recover from them enough to make them into stories later.”
This was my first Akwaeke Emezi book and holy shit I’m going to have to go and read their entire backlist now. You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty was so fantastic it left me speechless. I’ve seen some reviews and I understand this is not a book for everyone, but damn was it the perfect book for me.
The reason this book may not be for everyone is because it leans into a little bit of taboo when it comes to relationships. The relationship made sense to me though, both parties had lost major people in their lives and were still grieving. Them being able to grieve together and still respect their previous partners was so beautiful. I thought the topic was approached with the utmost respect and beauty.
Akwaeke Emezi’s prose is on another level. I listened to this book on audiobook and there were times when I was honest to god speechless because of how blown away I was. I’ve never read a book from another author who was able to do what Emezi did.
There is a lot of sexual description and sex scenes in this book which is why I don’t believe that it is for everyone. There are some people who don’t like to read stories like this and that is perfectly fine. I feel like this is a fact that everyone should be aware of before going into the book. The sex is an important part of the story and isn’t sex just for sex. It means something to the plot and is very intertwined with the handling of the main characters’ grief. Sex and grief go hand and hand and I thought it was done beautifully.
TW: grief, death, car accident, blood, death of a parent,
homophobia, sexual content

Beautifully written, Akwaeke has a way with words honestly. However I just simply did not care that much and felt the whole thing was a bigger ridiculous which is completely okay. It just felt a bit flat and no real growth from characters. Also I hate trauma bonding as a stepping stone to a relationship

I cannot state how much I absolutely loved and adored this book. The characters were beautiful, dynamic, and vivacious. The story was heartbreaking, life affirming, and everything all at once. I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it.

The story was rich, opulent, hot but I hated the main character so much. Even with all the reasoning, I just couldn’t get behind her actions. The story was quick and easy to read.
