I absolutely LOVED Undead! I have to say right away that I was on a pretty bad reader's block, I just couldnt get into anything..until I started reading Undead. It pulled me right out of my funk! Undead had a bit of a R.L. Stine "Fear Street" feel to it but with a modern touch. The story was interesting and the characters were fantastic.
This was a fun quirky zombie delight and an excellent debut!

The only thing I thought it was missing was just a tad more romance, there was definitely some chemistry there. This was a fun quirky zombie delight and an excellent debut!
Oozing with Brit sass, humor and teen stupidity, the Undead by Kirsty McKay is the first zombie novel I've read. This book doesn't rest. It's all action from start to finish and that's what I like about it. Sure, I got my fair share of frustration with this being a young adult novel and all but the plot and sequence of events made sense. This book was simply a good time and it did not promise anything that it did not deliver. Like with most zombie media, the zombies here were not front and center. They do appear plenty of occasions but what propels the story is how the main characters bounce off of each other and the choices they make. The main players were high school stereotypes but I'm not complaining. Not every book you read is a Dostoevsky.
I read the paperback while listening to the audiobook. The audiobook was so good. It was super British. I live. I highly recommend Undead and will definitely read the sequel soon!

Really fun and exciting to read, with a great cliffhanger ending. Loved it
God Damn this book is good!
It was so good, I actually forgot to post that I was reading it, because I was so busy reading!!!
It's hilarious, scary and unexpected all wrapped up into one. I love the characters, Pete who goes from sniveling on the bathroom floor (that scene was terrifying by the way) to the smart zombie killing kid he became. Malice, sorry Alice, who went from bitch-queen to caring friend. Smitty who...didn't really change at all did he? The same smart-ass joker stayed the same, not letting the zombies faze him in the slightest. Not to mention...
the ZOMBIES!!!
My favorite was of course Gareth,he was an asshole before he was turned though, and I loved the scene were Smitty goes back for the leather jacket. The names and comparison's were hilarious...
The whole story was a roller-coaster of horror, suspense, jokes, suspicion, fear and a tiny bit o' love flung in on the side. I'm still not sure what Smitty and Bobby are o each other, friends, girlfriend-boyfriend or just random kiss pals.
This book is hilarious...and you should seriously read it. :)

If you like zombies, you'll love this book! If you DON'T particularly like zombies, you'll still like this book! It's a very funny actionpacked story about a girl whose class field trip turns into a deadly encounter with zombie classmates. Her dry sense of humor is hilarious. there is some gore, but not too much. Very self-aware, kind of like a B-movie in book form. The Americanisms vs. Britishisms were cute too, as she is a Brit who spent time in America and now sounds more American than British to her classmates. No real swearing, just "pseudo-swearing", fine for middle schoolers who enjoy reading suspenseful funny zombie capers.
I'm a sucker for anything zombie - it's an obsession almost to the point that it's shameful. So picture a happy me hugging this book when I found it as a surprise in my mailbox. CUE EXCITEMENT.
And thankfully, Undead did deliver plenty of excitement. And plenty of zombies. Which is all I really need in a zombie book, so keep in mind that if zombies just aren't your thing.
REASONS TO READ:
1. Non-stop action:
Undead starts with a bang, ends with a bang, and every chapter is guaranteed to include a little emotional angst, some blood, and a scene that will leave your heart pounding. I felt like I was constantly waiting for a monster to jump out at me - which is saying a lot because I don't get that feeling too often while reading books.
2. Conspiracy theories that will make your head spin:
Admittedly, zombie stories aren't known for being the most creative - they're usually standard fare. But Undead doesn't launch into theories about why there are zombies right away (something to do with kids running for their lives). But once they do? I appreciated that there were a few surprises. Some things were predictable, but not everything.
3. Characters who evolve:
I wasn't too sure what to think of Smitty and Bobby at first. They didn't grab me initially, but they quickly wormed their way into my little heart. Bobby especially took a while to get to know, because she has herself so well-guarded and hidden away. But I was surprised about halfway through the book how much I was rooting for these two to get out of there alive. And? I loved that they could poke fun at each other and their situation. Undead is great partially because of the jokes and how it doesn't take itself too seriously - which is key for a zombie horror book.
I still felt like I was hoping for more from Undead to really WOW me though. Secondary characters that were more dimensional, a stronger & more unique story behind exactly what's taking place and why... both would have turned this into a book that I loved rather than just one I liked.
But this is still an excellent pick for fans of zombies like me.
